That Kind of Summer
Although he received awards around the world, film outsider Denis Cote is still considered a niche and experimental creator. From the perspective of PPFFW, his latest film – That Kind of Summer, nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale 2022 – almost appears mainstream. To its advantage, the film tells the story of 26-day long therapy of three hypersexual women with surprising tenderness, without any judgement or sensationalism. The ambiguous ending firmly places it within current sexuality-focussed discourses, which are slowly (but still too slowly) becoming increasingly popular. It is worth seeing how the arthouse deals with sexuality and where it sets its own limits. One of the main roles is played by Laure Giappiconi, an unconventional postporn artist whose other films are also on the festival programme.
